Thrasher's History
Thrasher Elementary School is a strong part of our local history. The school, on James Boulevard, opened in 1961, and grew rapidly with the population of Signal Mountain. Today, elementary students are served by Thrasher, and Nolan Elementary School.
Thrasher is a Kindergarten through grade 5 school located in the heart of Signal Mountain, TN. From 1975 - 1999, Thrasher served the mountain as an intermediate school with grades 3 - 5. In the fall of 1999, it was reopened as a K - 5 school serving over 500 students. The inside of the school reflects the warmness of the mountain with an indoor pond and park benches. Throughout the school the walls are palettes for learning. Murals around the school continue the theme of the community and/or the curriculum of that grade level. The building reflects the school's child friendly and nurturing culture.
Cultural Arts are an emphasis at this school. Our goal as an Allied Arts school is to provide students with basic skills, appreciation, and understanding of dance, literary arts, music, theater, and visual arts. We also plan and implement an advanced infusion of instruction to meet the grade level benchmarks within art disciplines based on national and state standards. Funds from Allied Arts and PTA provides a BrainDance teacher for K - 1 students. PTA also provides an Art teacher for the school. The music program offers chorus and hand bells to fifth grade students.

Signal Mountain's History
Signal Mountain and Walden have a rich history. For instance, did you know that centuries prior to the Civil War, it is believed that the Creek, Cherokee, and other Native American tribes used Signal Point to send fire and smoke signals?
In the Fall of 1863 the Union Army used Signal Point, near Alexian Village, as a communications station to send signals to Signal Headquarters in Chattanooga by fire, smoke and flags.
